GIG PREVIEW: CULTURES OF RESIsTANCE
Mean Fiddler
by Adam Polonsky
JERRY Dammers, founder of ska group The Specials, has been an influential figure, using music for political comment, since the Coventry outfit burst on the scene in the 1970s. Although he now spends much of his time behind a turntable and with his new band The Spatial AKA Orchestra, Dammers still finds the time to promote his political ideology.
He joins other artists on Monday July 9 at The Mean Fiddler in a benefit gig supporting Cultures of Resistance – a movement dedicated to the expression of resistance against war and racism.
Headlining the event is award-winning rapper and saxophonist Soweto Kinch (pictured), nominated for a Mercury Music Prize for his debut album in 2003.
Soweto has since won awards the world over, recognised for his organic fusion of urban sounds and ethnic rhythms.
Improvisational jazz musician Gilad Atzmon, the former Blockhead who toured extensively with Ian Dury, teams up with Palestinian singer Nizaar Al-Issa to perform a live soundtrack to clips of the classic film The Battle of Algiers (1965).
