Gloriously different drama
DAYS OF GLORY
Directed by Rachid Bouchareb
Certificate 12a
ALL hail a war film with a difference! Days of Glory focuses on the exploits of the little-known 7th Algerian Infantry Group which fought heroically for France in World War II.
They carved their name on a small part of the history books in ferocious battles in Tunisia, Sicily, Corsica, Italy and up to the Western Front, yet their exploits brought the survivors little or no recognition.
Indeed, according to this blood-stained saga, those still alive today (and in their 80s) are still waiting for their full Army pensions.
If this film doesn’t tip the scales for them, nothing will. Director Rachid Bouchareb takes his camera into the very eyeballs of this unlikely band of brothers – reluctant Muslim conscripts from the poorest areas of Algiers, persuaded to take up arms and probably lay down their lives for the glory of France, at the mercy of corrupt generals who send them into the firing line.
The battle scenes are as uncompromising and savage as any witnessed on screen before. This is raw, powerful cinema at its best.
Mark it on your card. |
