Hilary’ll teach ’em
FREEDOM WRITERS
Directed by Richard LaGravenese
Certificate 12A
WE'RE back in the classroom, this time with Hilary Swank (pictured) – who punched her weight in Million Dollar Baby – as fresh-faced teacher Erin Gruwell eager to make a difference to inner-city kids in a tough multi-cultural school in Long Beach, California.
Gang violence is out of control, her colleagues in the staff room have given up on the job, and things look pretty hopeless. But the lady has guts, and sets out to tame the blackboard jungle and stop the turf wars.
She finally persuades the kids to write their own daily diaries and find the creative spark in themselves. The film is inspired by the book of the diaries from Erin Gruwell herself.
With the current headlines about today’s disturbing youth climate its theme could hardly be more timely. Someone in Hollywood got lucky.
