Style Wars
Style Wars is an intelligent consideration of a cultural epoch – namely the birth of New York’s 1980s graffiti and hip-hop scenes and the related fashions in breakdance and clothing.
In one corner you have the artists who were transforming the look of the New York subway and streetscape, set to the music of the likes of the Sugar Hill Gang, The Treacherous Three and Grandmaster Flash, while trying to put a lid on this expressive explosion was Mayor Edward Koch’s police force and the NY Transit Authority.
Director Tony Silver meets the main players who were there at the start of one of the most enduring cultural movements of modern times.
A fascinating and enjoyable documentary, which has scooped awards across four major film festivals, including Sundance and Edinburgh.
Weinerworld, £19.99.
