Cake on Cake
TWINKLY indie-pop. You can travel the globe but if you like your indie music with a lo-fi edge, more glockenspiels than thrashing guitar, then there are only two places worth visiting.
One is Scotland – where it’s cold. They give us Belle and Sebastian. Aberfeldy. Camera Obscura. Arab Strap, etc etc.
The other is Scandiland – where it is cold.
They give us cute bands like The Concretes, Abba and Peter, Bjorn and John. Okay. Scratch out Abba – but if you concentrate on the new wave, Svee-den is the place to be.
Cake On Cake is the latest outfit from those shores to look out for. It must be something about the weather. The colder it gets, the more summery the music.
Their sun-kissed album is titled I Guess I Was Daydreaming and it is touched with a magical doped-out quality.
Sea-Microphone is a swaying affair, light keys and pipes coasted by the Helena Sundin’s crystal vocals. Not sure what she is singing about but it sure sounds nice.
Look hard and you can find this music on sale somewhere. If things click, the bigger record shops will soon show interest. No longer just Eurovision contenders and pretty girls, the Swedes are on their way.
