Yang follows in mighty classical guitar footsteps
PREVIEW: XUEFEI YANG
Wigmore Hall
FOR the best part of 40 years British classical guitar playing has been dominated by two figures, Julian Bream and John Williams.
The pair have recorded extensively, performed with each other and individually; indeed Williams made an appearance at Pizza Express Dean Street with jazz musician and Zappatista John Etheridge just this week.
But now, following in their mighty footsteps is a young Chinese musician who first made a name for herself when still only in her teens, performed to packed houses across the world.
And this week she performs at Wigmore Hall.
John Williams heard Xuefei Yang perform in Beijing when she was just 14 and was so impressed he gave her one of his guitars.
She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and settled in London a few years ago.
How lucky we are to have such a musician.
The concert features performances of Villa-Lobos’ Prelude and Four Suites, Sor’s Variation on a theme of Mozart and Albeniz’s Asturias; Sevilla.
