Cards will do nicely
• NOBODY has ever said that identity cards would stop a terrorist attack in its tracks (Terror card a bad idea, December 24). What they will do, as part of the National Identity Scheme, is help prevent criminals and terrorists adopting multiple identities which they use to conceal their activities. It is worth remembering that over the last few years some major terrorist suspects have been arrested with up to 50 different identities.
Identity cards make this much more difficult by securely linking an individual to one single identity using a combination of fingerprints and digital photos – unique to each person – to details like their name, address and date of birth.
The National Identity Scheme will also help the fight against identity fraud, illegal working and immigration, and will also bring a new measure of convenience for individuals who need to prove their identity in a range of transactions, including getting a job, opening a bank account or getting a mortgage.
