Mayor follows in the footsteps of Whittington on walk to City

MAYOR of Islington Barbara Smith joined mayors from across London on Sunday for a charity fundraising walk.
The annual walk, which is in its 35th year, commemorates London’s most famous former mayor Dick Whittington.
The 32 mayors, dressed in their red robes, were led by the lord mayor on their five-mile trek. They started in Archway at the Whittington Hospital’s statue of Whittington’s cat. It was there the poor Dick Whittington is supposed to have heard the bells calling him back to London to become lord mayor.
After a short stop at an Islington pub, they finished at Mansion House in the City. The tired travellers were welcomed by bagpipes and men on horseback.
The Lord Mayor of London David Lewis said: “It was a splendid idea to get all the London mayors out of their offices on a Sunday walk for their individual charities.”
