Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 7 September 2007

Clocking up CO2

• IT was so refreshing to learn that Islington, anxious to make the most of its A1 flowers, has cast its net wide in its search for a floral supremo. Our blooming A1 display is now nurtured by an energetic young man from Matlock, in Derbyshire.

Matlock is a great place – a bit like Islington but with a smile – and it’s where I acquired my taste for mushy peas.
What is most interesting about this source of expertise is that it sits proudly on the A6 – not the A1 – and it’s nearly 200 miles away, a return trip of 400 miles.
Driving 400 miles a day, five days a week, creates a generous serving of carbon dioxide.
Suppose your journey is done in a Ford Mondeo. With a light touch on the accelerator, this produces about 150 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
For a distance of 400 miles (660 kilometres) you would produce about 100 kilograms of CO2. This is about 15 stone 10 pounds.
In other words, to work in Islington and live in Matlock you are responsible for generating more than your own weight in carbon dioxide – every day.
When we need to get our municipal windmills maintained, maybe we could get an expert over from Holland – in his own private jet, perhaps.
