Lord Griffiths
‘Britney symbolises disintegrating youth’

Methodist minister’s horror at ‘slow-motion’ ordeal

ONE of Britain’s best known Methodist ministers – Labour peer Lord Griffiths – has described pop singer Britney Spears as a symbol of the troubled lives of so many of Britain’s young people.
Ms Spears, who recently appeared completely bald after shaving her hair off, is featured in the latest newsletter from Lord Griffiths, minister at Wesley’s Chapel in Old Street, in which he expresses horror at a youth culture that leads some young people to drink and drugs.
Lord Griffiths says that no one illustrates the “disintegration” of young people better than Ms Spears.
He writes: “She’s had her beautiful hair shaved off and continues to throw herself headlong into her hedonistic activities.
“She feeds her body with things that are so difficult to handle. It’s as if the whole world is invited to watch the disintegration of her soul, a process that’s taking place in slow motion and in full public gaze.”
Lord Griffiths describes how he witnessed an example of yob culture when travelling home by train one night.
“The carriage is full of young people holding beer cans,” he writes. “They’ve drunk a huge amount and are continuing to imbibe.
“Their behaviour is loud. They shout a lot. They hurl abuse at anyone who looks in their direction. They’re stoned out of their minds. They puke all over the place.”
He refers to a look of “disengagement in the eyes” of those who smoke cannabis.
Of other drug users, he adds: “It’s as if a letter bomb were posted into their heads which explodes violently, leaving brains, personalities and human potential blown to bits.”
Lord Griffiths wonders how parents manage to cope.
“I haven’t a clue what’s going on,” he admits. “I have nothing but admiration for our youngsters. They fill me with pride. But that’s far from understanding the world they live in.”
