Invest rent surplus in estates
• STEPHEN Mullin asks how the Independent Working Class Associaiton would “fund the borrowing requirement for Islington’s council estates other than through the revenue streams provided by tenants’ rents”(Labour neglected our estates, February 9).
Nationally, council tenants pay around £1.3 billion more in rent a year than is redistributed to councils for management, maintenance and repairs to council homes.
The government’s own research has found that councils need £1.8 billion a year more than government actually allocates for this purpose.
If we then add in the billions that have been pocketed by governments through the sale of council homes, we would probably find that we not only have enough to keep council homes “decent”, but also to build sufficient new homes to deal with the horrendous levels of homelessness and overcrowding that exist now. I hope that clears it up.
