Crossed lines
• FARRINGDON station will rightly be the meeting point of two new future rail links (Sleepless nights ahead as work on rail links looms, February 9). But by linking the Crossrail and Thameslink projects, readers could easily have obtained the mistaken impression that future construction of the Crossrail project will take place during unsociable hours.
According to the construction code which must be kept to under the Secretary of State for Transport’s control, core working hours for contractors will be from 8am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. There can be one hour either side for start-up and close-down activities.
Exact timings are subject to discussion with councils, as whoever finally builds Crossrail will need permission from them before any work can commence.
The reference to a giant, tunnel-boring machine moving in to carry out work in the area is further misleading. The machine will, in fact, be launched between Canary Wharf and Custom House in the Docklands area of east London and when it arrives at Farringdon station it will be 30 metres below ground.
I would like to make clear that, while Thameslink is also a new rail project, its development is totally separate from Crossrail.
