Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 July 2009

Let’s keep the this treasured community space right where it belongs

• I ATTENDED the Well being conference at the Camden Centre, in my role as co-chair of Camden Mental Health Consortium.
Many people remarked on the good atmosphere in the hall, and what a superb building it is for community use.
People who attended this conference mostly use mental health services, and can be easily intimidated by grand surroundings. But they did not feel like that. The Camden Centre is a surprisingly homely space, perhaps because of its warm wooden panelling, and perhaps because of its very long history of community activity.
It is unbelievable to think that the Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration could be planning to flog it off, despite its treasured use as a civic and community space.
No doubt it needs renovation – so why not renovate it as part of Councillor Ralph Scott’s plans described in your newspaper recently?
Why throw away a part of Camden’s history for the sake of a few bob?
And look at the architecture – Camden Centre belongs with the Old Town Hall. In fact it is physically linked through the balcony.
It does not belong with the modern Town Hall Extension, which is said to be so expensive to run.
So let’s keep it where it belongs, as an annexe to the Old Town Hall, where community activities like last week’s can continue to run.
Cllr Penny Abraham
Labour, Bloomsbury ward
