Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 February 2009

Exercise in futility could ruin historic square

• ARGYLE Square is one of the historic London squares of which Camden is rightly proud.
One end of the square is covered with a large multi-use ball court, which is well used, and so, surely, Argyle Square is already doing its bit in the battle of the bulge.
However, Camden Council now plans to install a number of large, colourful, ugly exercise machines in the square. Have they suggested placing them in Russell Square, for example? No. That’s because Russell Square has a large resident population which would, rightly, refuse to accept such an insult to their square.
Argyle Square, however, is surrounded by hotels, and so is fair game for the council. The few actual residents that live in the square, and our councillors, have all opposed this “outdoor gym”, vigorously and repeatedly, but the council insists our views are irrelevant. We are setting up a Friends of Argyle Square but, if the council steam-roller their decision through, it may be too late.
