Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 February 2009

Video nasty

• WELL done, Sergeant Bob Dear, for showing Camden councillors your video about late-night violence in Camden Town (Cops reveal violence on video nasty, February 12).
You were right to say that, in spite of the council’s policy to refuse new licences in the Camden “cumulative impact area”, the policy has been ignored by the licensing committee.
Don Williams, the chair of the committee, says he is shocked by the video.
We, the local residents, are only too familiar with the squalor shown in the video.
Cllr Williams, there is no need to take a fresh look at your licensing policy, which is exemplary. Could you now start to apply it?
Ivan Faudet
on behalf of the Harmood, Clarence and Hartland Residents’ Associations

Policy failure

• CAMDEN’S licensing committee now acknowledges that the licensing policy has failed Camden Town (Cops reveal violence on video nasty, February 12).
There are two reasons for this failure. Panels are not strict enough at applying the existing policies in the Special Policy Areas (SPAs) of Camden Town and Seven Dials. More importantly, the policy itself is not strong enough. The SPA policies, which contain a presumption to refuse the application, can only be applied to applications for new licences or increases in capacity. An application to extend hours is governed by exactly the same policy in the SPAs as in the rest of the borough. Without a clear presumption to refuse, the problems will continue to get worse. Camden should rapidly carry out a review of the licensing policy.
