The plaque unveiled in Peggy’s memory
Plaque in memory of Peggy unveiled

FRIENDS and relatives of Peggy Jay, the late president of the Heath and Hampstead Society, gathered last Wednesday to unveil a memorial to her.
Peggy passed away on what would have been her 95th birthday last January – and those who wanted to honour her memory came a year later to Hampstead’s St John’s Parish graveyard in Church Row.
Her daughter Catherine spoke of her mother’s dedication to the Heath and Hampstead area.
While Peggy’s ashes were scattered in the Isle of Wight, where the family spent summer holidays, Catherine said it was fitting that her memorial could be found in the St John’s graveyard. She added: “It is particularly fitting that the plaque draws attention to the extraordinary span of years during which she worked unstintingly to protect the Heath and Hampstead area.”
After the ceremony, led by St John’s vicar, the Reverend Stephen Tucker, family and friends hosted a party in her honour at Burgh House in New End – which she had battled to save from being sold privately by Camden Council nearly 40 years ago.
