Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 January 2009

‘Overcrowded’ homes definition is confusing

• AFTER reading the letter from Councillor Chris Naylor (Overcrowded families, January 22) I am a little bit confused by how people become overcrowded
I have lived in a one-bedroom flat with my eight-year-old daughter for five years and I now have a five-month-old baby boy.
So I applied to Camden’s housing department for a larger home.
I was told I was not overcrowded because I have four sleeping spaces within my very small flat.
My daughter has been a very bad sleeper since birth, and now, after tests at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children I know that this is due to her having a condition which comes with all sorts of other problems.
For this I was given another 40 points and now have a total of 220 points, but there is still no chance of us ever getting a bigger place.
Therefore, there is no other option but for me to give up work as I get very little or no sleep.
I see people getting moved into bigger properties all the time so I am left wondering if it is a case of some people knowing how to work the system as everybody has advice for me except Camden’s housing department.
