Exhibiting excellence: Frank Barnes pupils win prestigious award for work at British Museum

AFTER visiting the British Museum and recording their interpretations of some of its key exhibitions in British Sign Language (BSL), schoolchildren from the Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children have won a prestigious award.
The youngsters from the Swiss Cottage school were handed the Jodi Award for their involvement in the project with the Bloomsbury museum.
The children described what they thought of several exhibitions and gave a guide to a series of reliefs featuring Assyrian Palace lion hunts and the Parthenon Temple in Athens, and went on to have their thoughts recorded on film for other deaf people to watch.
The guides were given in BSL – a language for the deaf which uses hand shapes and movements to convey meaning – and can be seen on the museum’s website.
Camden schools chief Councillor Andrew Mennear said: “It’s great that, because of the pupils’ hard work, deaf visitors will in future be able to enjoy the
museum even more.”
The awards are run by charity the Jodi Mattes Trust – named after a member of staff at the museum – which aims to improve access for all to culture and the arts.
Headteacher Karen Simpson said: “We are all so thrilled with this award. This has been the most fantastic project for the children to be involved in. Not only have they learned so much at the British Museum, but they have a great sense of achievement – knowing that through their work they are helping to make the collections more accessible to others.”
