Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 June 2008

Pitch battle

• AS a daily walker on the Heath, being a local resident, I was surprised and quite irritated to find no less than 15 tents pitched around the third pond on Monday morning. And as I passed, one person emerged pulling up his boxer shorts having clearly spent the night there.
I understand fishing is permitted, but overnight stays? What is to stop me from pitching a tent in the middle of one of the fields this summer and staying there?
That particular pond seems also to be used as a running circuit on the weekends, sending the new and numerous family of coots into a flurry. One weekend in April, a time trial-type race suddenly began round that pond as I was walking beside it, and the fast moving, brightly attired people circling on all sides caused three pairs of Canada geese in the pond to start fighting and honking. I do not feel quite so against the running, though it is annoying, but the camping is unacceptable.
