Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 January 2008

Gridlock poisons air

• I AM increasingly worried about our health in Kentish Town, because of the rising levels of air pollution caused by gridlock in Kentish Town Road.
We’re up there with the Finchley and Euston roads for being toxic canyons that are potential life-shortners to us local residents.
It’s not just carbon monoxide. Both nitrogen dioxide and particulates (PM 10) are now off the chart and far above what the European Union deems to be safe and there’s growing evidence that the new generation of bio-fuels may be making the situation worse.
It’s my impression that the newly introduced four-way green pedestrian lights sequence at the junction with Leighton Road has worsened the state of affairs and this will be exacerbated by the forthcoming welcome addition of a much-needed pedestrian light at the junction with Prince of Wales Road.
What could be done? It’s all down to traffic and there needs to be less.
We need to use the buses, tackle the cross-boroughs schools run and not make short car journeys, especially when we could walk.
And we could get on bikes and use the side roads.
As well as the obvious health benefits, journey times become completely predictable and you don’t get wet nearly as often as you’d imagine. Please, get on yer bikes and live longer!
