Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 10 January 2008

Town Hall must step in to protect little Zarine

• SOME years ago my foster daughter, aged 15, was in danger of being sent to Liberia.
Although in the care of Camden, no one wanted responsibility. We went to a solicitor who immediately issued wardship proceedings thereby ensuring Camden did take responsibility and that my daughter’s safety was assured.
The case of Zarine Rentia (Dobson backing for Zarine, December 6) is surely one in which the safe care of a child is paramount. Why then are not the combined family schools and social services team ensuring this girl’s wellbeing?
Although old-style wardships are rare, they are still used
If it is so easy to intervene on other levels, one would have thought it was a duty to protect this young woman.
She may even be able, as in my daughter’s case, to request that she is warded herself.
Taking this course of action would not only prevent her removal from the country, but it would also prevent her removal from her home into a detention centre.
Following the war in Liberia not many of my daughter’s family are alive.
If I hadn’t walked into the solicitor’s that day my daughter could have been dead.
