Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 3 January 2008

In the dog house again

• THE stupidity of people never fails to amaze me.
I refer to the letter (Dog House, December 13).
How the writer can say that the housing authority are responsible for the actions of their tenants’ dogs is beyond me.
It is like saying that if the housing authority house a criminal then they should be held accountable for that persons crime!
What I would say is that the dog is never to blame, just rubbish dog owners.
I myself own a Staffordshire bull terrier. She is a truly wonderful dog, but I know how to handle her. I am aware of other people’s perceptions and how other dog owners may be fearful if they were to see her off-lead running toward their dog.
It’s not a nice situation.
Owners of dogs that could potentially provoke fear in people must be aware of that and behave in a responsible manner.
The problem is there is no policing of dog owners and far to many see the bull terrier and larger breeds of dog as a status symbol.
It has nothing to do with where you live, just the mentality of the owners. The police do nothing to curb the behaviour, when Camden Council try and take action, people are in uproar.
I would have much preferred the on-lead in all public places policy to have been passed with the option for discretion rather than have nothing at all. The dog wardens are reluctant to tackle the yob culture because those owners are intimidating; they would much rather tackle the easy target – someone with a labrador that is off lead.
Owning a dog is one of the most wonderful experiences you can have.
Housing authorities must allow their responsible tenants to live their lives. They should just tackle the bad tenants who make others lives a misery.
