Sixth formers and GCSE students from Hampstead School with the Best Delegation cup
Students win over Model UN

STUDENTS from Hampstead School talked judges into handing them a trophy, beating top private schools, for their debating skills at a mock United Nations forum.
Thirteen pupils from the school in Westbere Road were awarded the Best Delegation cup at the International Model United Nations (MUN), hosted by the Methodist College Belfast, for their demonstration of consensus building.
The state school pupils were pleased to have proved their mettle against the likes of Eton and the Methodist College.
Harry Farmer, 17, who lives in Cavendish Road, said their competitors had received a lot of input from their teachers.
He said: “Our teachers are very supportive but to be fair we did it ourselves. In this school there is a mentality that you get what you put in.”
Lobbying and bargaining took place even before the debates took place.
Delegations made up of four or five students represented their appointed countries’ policies.
They tabled resolutions and won support at committee level to achieve approval by the General Assembly in the final stages.
Simeon Wallis, 16, who lives in Neasden and has been a member of MUN since 2003, said that as a result of years of preparing for debate he has developed a more cautious approach to swallowing news bulletins whole.
Rebecca Chan, 17, of Mill Lane added: “We are more likely to believe statistics if it agrees with our own opinion even if it’s not particularly substantiated.”
