Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 October 2007

Survey of 393 bus use raises questions on route

LEIGHTON Road residents surveyed passengers using the 393 bus extension.
The results may surprise some people who feel that the service is a success.
The average number of passengers on weekdays is 5.5 per bus and on Saturday less than 7.
One of the principal reasons Transport for London gave for routing the bus extension along Leighton Road was to make available the interchange with Tube and rail at Kentish Town.
In fact only a handful of passengers use this interchange.
The residents’ survey was over one full weekday and one Saturday.
The new route has been operating for long enough to make a judgment that the days chosen were fairly typical of passenger numbers.
It is not in question that more east-west transport is useful to many Londoners.
In view, however, of the huge public subsidy to pay for the current 393 service, is it not fair to ask whether another route using Agar Grove, Torriano Avenue and Brecknock Road
instead of Leighton Road and the top end of Kentish Town Road might not provide better value?
Everything else about the route could stay the same.

Chair, Leighton Road Neighbourhood Association, NW5
