Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 October 2007

Care means test amounts to a loss of human rights

ON October 5 I had my financial care assessment visit.
Like most other people, this left me feeling humiliated, degraded, weepy, scared and debilitated.
Before the interview I felt like I had a lion in my heart. Now I am similar to a kicked, whimpering dog at my master’s feet – social care being the master.
I was so upset I visited my GP to ask for help. She has referred me to the Royal Free.
Since then I have spoken to other elderly and disabled people.
We have all felt violated. Any one of your readers may live until they are old and need care.
Only the mega-rich can afford decent long time support and medication that can keep you alive for years.
People of Camden, are you prepared to let some government officer write intimate details of your needs and spending on a form?
This is disrespectful, frightening, intimidating.
The spin is that this only affects those with £30,000, but if you live in a block of flats this can vanish on repairs.
The fact is I live on income support and I was treated in the same way. Ask your MP why the elderly and disabled are losing their human rights, even those in residential care.
This has affected my health, so I asked for my form to be returned. I am still waiting.
