Court order for judge who sent texts to ex-wife
A JUDGE who became “obsessed” with his ex-wife’s relationships with other men has failed to have a harassment conviction overturned.
He was accused of sending abusive texts to his ex-wife, writing letters to her employer, which she claimed “undermined her integrity”, and spending hours hanging around outside their former marital home in Camden. On one occasion, he burst into her home in the early hours of the morning and with his mobile phone took photos of her and a friend.
A nine-day appeal at Inner London Crown Court heard how the judge, a Home Office advisor whose identity has been concealed for legal reasons, claimed he was acting to protect his children from his former wife’s relationships with other men, following their divorce in 2004.
The judge is now subject to a restraining order.
Ruling against the judge’s appeal on Thursday, Judge Kenneth Machin described his behaviour as “totally out of character” considering his “impeccable and impressive background”.
The court was told the judge had become “totally obsessed with the relationship between his former wife” and her male friend.
The judge, represented by Michael Wood, claimed his ex-wife had handed over the care of the children to the nanny so she could “pursue several men”.
When asked why he had burst in on his ex-wife and her friend in the middle of the night to take photos, he said: “It seemed I couldn’t reason with them. The children were telling me things and I had to have the absolute and definitive proof.”
Prosecuting, Julian Christopher told how the judge had written several letters to his ex-wife’s employer. Mr Christopher detailed a list of “derogatory and abusive” texts sent to the judge’s ex-wife, reading out one example, where the judge said: “You are a shameful woman not fit to be a mother. You lie to everybody and have sex with men under their (the children’s) noses. You are truly vile.” The judge is now expected to report to the Lord Chancellor with the results of the proceedings.
