Desperate leap to evade arrest
A SUSPECTED shoplifter broke both his ankles as he attempted to flee the police.
The man, 43, had been stopped leaving a Camden Town branch of Woolworths on Thursday with a baby monitor it was alleged he had not paid for.
He was taken upstairs by security officers, but he jumped from the first floor window before police arrived.
Horrified onlookers in Camden High Street watched as the man leapt to the pavement below. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” said Mary, who had been waiting for her husband nearby. “He jumped into the traffic lights. A car missed him by inches. Then he went to get up and try and run but he fell against the pole. Then the security guards came out and the police came.”
She added: “He looked in a lot of pain. His legs must have been shattered. The security guard said they’d had him in the office for shoplifting and were waiting for the police.”
A police press officer said the man had not been charged, but was due to be summonsed to court where he is expected to face charges.
