EDUCATION SPECIAL - by SIMON WROE

Faith centre of debate

SCHOOLS secretary Ed Balls chose the British Library on Monday to launch *Faith in the System.
Seen as paving the way for more faith schools, it states: “The government will work with local authorities as the commissioners of schools and school places… and with faith organisations to remove unnecessary barriers to the creation of new faith schools.” Mr Balls said: “Today around one third of the total schools have a religious character. I fully recognise that faith schools are popular with many parents and make a valuable contribution to the way in which this country educates its children.”
The move immediately drew criticism from teac hing unions..
Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said: “Our members believe that we need schools which embrace the diversity within our community, not a diversity of schools dividing pupils and staff on religious grounds.”
