Camden New Journal - THE CROW BY RICHARD OSLEY AND DAVID GOWERS
Published: 16 August 2007

Time running out on lucky Gooner goals

LET’S call them ‘Top Four Tottenham’ from now on.

After all, that’s what Martin Jol and his new best friend Darren Bent were calling Spurs – with a straight face – in pre-season.
This was the season that Top Four Tottenham finally broke through.
The big time for Champions League and all that. Forty million of new signings. The Top Four Tottenham fans were all in good spirit.
Bent insists he wasn’t messing about when he said shortly after arriving at White Hart Lane: “I believe Spurs have a real opportunity to break into the top four now and I think we can be one of the biggest clubs in Europe.” That’s right. He said ‘Spurs’. Of course, there is a tragic inevitability to what has happened at Top Four Tottenham since. The history books are littered with false hope.
Given that, was it such a wise move to promise so much again this time around? Maybe defeats to Sunderland and Everton wouldn’t have been so embarrassing if Top Four Tottenham had kept their Top Four mouths shut.
Arsenal are the genuine top four article. Missing Thierry? Maybe.
But there was genuine spirit in the comeback against Fulham on Sunday, the kind of heroic performance which makes Top Four Tottenham’s claim to the north London crown seem all the more foolhardy.

WELL Osley, you’ve had your fun with Etoe, now let’s get serious.
I was shocked to find out Etoe was a real female. I thought it was a lady’s photo and someone who knew about football was writing the column. If you let women talk about football it could lead to all sorts. What next? The vote?
Now down to business. How lucky you Gooners’ were on Sunday. One down against Fulham and all because the sun shining off Lehmann’s bald spot dazzled him into thinking the player in the white shirt was an Arsenal player (whose shirts are mainly red). Priceless!
For the next 90 minutes Arsenal could not get near the goal. A word of advice – do you know the two white upright posts with the horizontal one joining them? Well, they need to put the ball in there. I hope that helps.
As for your lucky goals, the first was never a penalty. That dive deserves a Bafta. Your second was offside by a mile and I’m sure I heard a French voice shout “Creez Coleman” and that’s why the Fulham players stopped. This is gamesmanship at its worst.
However, Spurs ripped Sunderland apart for 90 minutes and then we let them score, so cunningly losing the game; to fool our rivals into thinking we’re the same as last season. If only Arsenal were that clever.
David Gowers is a Spurs fan who lives in Primrose Hill
