Happy ending for adult literacy as stories clinch online honour

TWO City and Islington College students have won a national writing competition to have their stories made available in a global online story bank and published in a collection due out in the autumn.
George Cochran, from Finsbury Park, and Elisabed Abashidze, of Junction Road, were among 11 winners, whittled down from 700 entrants, of the Voices on the Page project, which celebrates the efforts and achievements of adult literacy students.
The task, set by the National Research and Development Centre for adult literacy and numercy (NRDC) asked participants to enter a script which could be either factual or fictional, but focusing on emotions.
English foundation student Elisabed, whose story Auntie Ellie recalled childhood memories, said: “This has been one of the most pleasant surprises in my life –
I was honoured.”
The packed prize-giving ceremony took place on the May 25.
