Estate coppers should quit cars
• I HAVE been a resident of Regent’s Park estate for more than 20 years. In the past two years I have seen crime and anti-social behaviour spiral out of control.
Since the implementation of the Safer Neighbourhoods teams, police do not appear to patrol the estate any more.
Police community support officers are seen but they are ineffectual. Safer Neighbourhoods police are only seen periodically driving around the estate, not getting out or speaking to the hordes of yobs that congregate each night around the Clarence Gardens-Roberts Street area. Elderly and young alike are in fear for their safety and do not leave the flats after dark.
Last weekend a young man received severe head wounds. Again, Safer Neighbourhoods police have not been seen. Why do they need a car to patrol an estate in which their station is in the middle. If they walked and interacted with “their” public they may find out what people think and quite possibly lose weight.
Where are the “eyes and ears” that Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair promised? The estate is in turmoil and I fear it has gone too far to rescue. Why can’t we have back the community officers who sorted this estate out? DI Babu’s team worked with the community, dealing with everyday issues. There is no contact now with the Safer Neighbourhoods team, who I feel do not have a grasp of the situation.
