Mixed fortunes at dinner special
TOP fighters from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club turned out for the club’s first dinner show of the year on Wednesday at the Irish Centre in Murray Street, Camden Town.
The boxing extravaganza organised by trustees chairman Frank Carty saw the club, which is based in Talacre Road in Kentish Town, suffer mixed fortunes as eight of their promising fighters stepped up for three junior, and five senior contests.
The Saints team took to the ring in new club colours after keen amateur boxing fan Steve Neerkin, who lives in Hampstead, donated a brand new strip to the club before the show.
Among the top fights on the night saw Saud Hafiz, 26, stop Anrana Ramakrishnalal from Epsom in the second round of their three, two-minute round bout in the 60kg division.
Kentish Town fighter Alex Kyriacou, 22, continued the Saints success in his 64kg fight as he picked up a unanimous victory over George Bennett.
Club mates Haruhito Tomi and Maurad Boudjemha also picked up unanimous wins in their respective 67kg and 81kg contests. The only defeat for St Pancras in the senior division saw Kilburn’s Alan Higgins, 18, narrowly beaten by Finchley’s Lonut Birtalan in his 74kg bout.
In the junior category, Islington fighter Dylan Stokes, 12, lost on the majority decision in his 51kg contest against Jack Slingo. Sammy McCarthy, 13, was lost out on the majority decision in his 40kg bout against Sam Gilley from Waltham Forest.
The only other bout of the night saw 12-year-old Holborn boxer Charlie Worley narrowly beaten by Epsom’s Neville Smith.
St Pancras will now prepare their team of talented fighters for the National Novice Championships, which are due to be held at the York Hall in Bethnal Green at the end of the month. |
