MPs back under-fire bus pass

NINETEEN Labour MPs, including Camden’s Frank Dobson and Glenda Jackson, have signed a parliamentary motion defending a free pensioners’ bus and Tube pass from attacks by the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives
Lib Dem peer Lord Bradshaw recently tried to make changes in the Concessionary Bus Travel Bill which would threaten the Freedom Pass. Meanwhile, Phil Taylor, a Conservative councillor from Ealing, wants the scheme to be “re-targeted” away from most pensioners to the “very old”. He claims users of the scheme are “recipients of largesse”.
Mr Dobson, Holborn and St Pancras MP, and Ms Jackson, who represents Hampstead and Highgate, have joined forces with other MPs, including Islington’s Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry, to defend the pass.
The MPs’ motion says the Freedom Pass is a “valuable scheme that should be maintained” and backs Mayor of London Ken Livingstone in defending the pass.
