Rocket science! Grow your own using food leftovers and help to save the planet
AN innovative composting machine which turns leftovers into plant food has been set to work on the Church Street estate.
The machine – known as the Rocket – combines leftover food with waste wood, to make compost, which will be used in local allotments.
A trial earlier in the year saw the machine make fast work of 60 tonnes of food waste, which would have otherwise gone straight into landfill.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, cabinet member for city management said: “This machine provides a simple way for residents to reduce the amount of unnecessary food waste being sent to landfill.
“We can all do our bit for the environment and the council has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2012. Improving ways to help residents recycle more is another step towards achieving this.”
