Award for fire chief’s
30 years
WESTMINSTER’S fire chief has been presented with an award for his 30 years of service.
Borough Commander Archie Chandler was presented with the long-service award at the London Fire Brigade training centre in Southwark.
Mr Chandler, 53, said: “I definitely work in the most challenging borough in London. I have a huge amount of responsibility but I enjoy my role immensely. It’s so unique and varied – with a quarter of a million residents and an extra million people a day either working or visiting, it’s quite unlike any other area in the world.”
He began his career in the army fire service and served in Hampshire and West Sussex before taking charge at Soho, Paddington and Westminster fire stations.
Mr Chandler has faced a number of high-profile incidents including a call-out to Kensington Palace on Christmas Day. He was also present during the 1999 siege of the Greek embassy by 50 Kurdish protesters during which a teenage girl set herself alight.
Mr Chandler, who now lives in Basingstoke, added: “I can honestly say it’s been 30 years of enjoyment. It’s a great career – it’s wonderful to be able to help people.” |
