The sight savers Medics save hundreds from blindness during mercy mission to Ghana
A TEAM of eye specialists have saved the sight of more than 200 Ghanaians by performing vital operations for free.
Cathy Asante, a sister at the Western Eye hospital in Marylebone, persuaded colleagues at St Mary’s and Moorfields to travel out to west Africa after hearing that the only eye specialist in the region had died.
She set up the charity, Touch of Light, to fund the trip. The 49-year-old, who moved to London from Ghana 21 years ago, said: “I had sleepless nights worrying about what to do.
“I mentioned it to my colleagues and they were so enthusiastic I broke down in tears.”
Ali Mearza, consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Imperial College, who was also on the trip, said that saving the sight of the 202 patients they saw was a “wonderfully rewarding experience”.
