Gay hate death: trio in court
THREE suspects arrested after the death of a gay civil servant attacked in Trafalgar Square have made a brief appearance at the Old Bailey.
The trio, two teenage girls who cannot be named for legal reasons, and Joel Alexander, 19, are accused of manslaughter.
Late on the night of September 25 Ian Baynham, a 62-year-old from Beckenham, south-east London, was allegedly abused outside the South African High Commission.
Mr Baynham, who was with a friend and had been celebrating landing a new job at the Home Office, remonstrated and was then assaulted, suffering severe head injuries and brain damage.
He died at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, on October 13 when doctors switched off his life support machine.
His alleged assailants were not asked to enter pleas when they stood before Judge Stephen Kramer, QC.
The 17-year-old girls and Mr Alexander, who are all from south London, were granted bail. They are due to attend a pre-trial hearing on January 29 and a jury is expected to be sworn in on April 7 for a case expected to last four weeks. |
