Tube could have been renamed ‘Bazalgette’
TUBE bosses have considered an application to change the name of Embankment Tube station to “Bazalgette”.
The intriguing attempt to change the name of the riverside station is revealed in a response from Transport for London (TfL) to a Freedom of Information request made by the West End Extra.
But the identity of whoever suggested the name change remains a mystery as the released information has been redacted to protect their anonymity.
TfL added that the cost of changing signs and maps made it expensive to make a change names of stations and warned that it would only be done with “universal support”.
It is thought that an admirer of engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who helped create London’s first proper sewer system down by the river in the 19th century, dreamed up the idea of a tribute.
Sir Joseph’s great-great-grandson is Peter Bazalgette, the media company director who brought Big Brother to television screens in the UK. A memorial to Sir Joseph including a bust stands on Victoria embankment.
TfL said in a letter to the West End Extra: “London Underground receives a number of requests each year for the names of Tube stations to be changed. The cost of changing the name of a station is substantial and time consuming.”
