New-build classrooms and more
THE ribbons have been cut across the borough after the latest wave of the government’s Building Schools for the Future project was completed.
As of this week pupils at Pimlico Academy will sit down to lessons in brand new design and technology classrooms and science laboratories, as well as being able to let off steam in a new sports centre.
Westminster City School in Victoria has seen the addition of an underground sports hall, new staff room, and music department.
The redevelopment of St Marylebone School’s Blandford Street site into a university-style learning centre has also been completed.
All three schools have enhanced their green credentials, with solar panels and green roofs becoming a permanent fixture.
The facilities have been paid for out of the £152million BSF grant.
Work at these schools is due to be completed by 2011, with the borough’s other secondary schools also primed for the bulldozers to move in.
Later this month, two new art rooms, two business studies classrooms, four science laboratories and three technology rooms will open in refurbished accommodation at St George’s School in Maida Vale.
Mark Page, Westminster City Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Our aim is to provide the best possible start in life for every child in Westminster and achieving this major milestone in this exciting programme is great news for pupils, parents and staff.
“The new facilities at these schools will not only make a real difference to pupils but also the wider community.”
