Artists’ ‘Species’ inspired by the travels of Darwin

AN exhibition by leading wildlife artists inspired by the great naturalist Charles Darwin and his voyages to the Galapagos Islands opens at the Mall Galleries this week.
Highlights include a life-size sheet metal sculpture of the Galapagos giant tortoise known as “Lonesome George” (why are tortoises always called George?) by Harriet Mead, and Darren Rees’ painting of iguanas from Espanola in the famous islands.
But it’s not all dinosaur derivatives and strange beasts. Part of the exhibition will be dedicated to Sir Peter Scott, son of Antarctic explorer Robert, the man described by David Attenborough as the “patron saint” of conservation.
Scott set up the World Wildlife Fund – he even designed the original panda logo – as well as the Society of Wildlife Artists.
Some of his paintings will be shown as part of the exhibition, among paintings and sculptures from around 100 artists. And kicking things off will be doyenne of nature TV and star of Springwatch, Chris Packham.
