Traders get wired up for market’s makeover

MARKET traders in Pimlico are celebrating after the council announced a £1.6million improvement plan for Tachbrook Market.
The market in Tachbrook Street will be transformed from its current forlorn state, with better lighting, new stalls and resurfaced cobble stones.
For the first time, each of the 21 traders, who sell a range of products from clothes to fruit and vegetables, will be linked up to a power supply.
It is hoped the investment will bolster the market which has been suffering after two supermarket chains recently opened up in the area.
The scheme is being funded by the council’s civic streets programme and is set to be completed in time for next summer.
The council has allayed fears that the market is being gentrified, ahead of a plan to up the rates.
They have assured stall-holders that daily pitch charges, which start at £10 in the week, rising to £25 on Saturday, will not change after the revamp.
Cabinet member for economic development at the council Brian Connell said: “We have recently opened the Maida Hill Market, in the north of the borough, which has been a great success.
“We’re hoping to bring this market back to life in a similar way, by improving lighting and public footways, to make sure it looks more attractive to potential customers. If the market looks well-managed then we’ll get people who would not otherwise come to the market and in addition more people will want to run stalls.
“I would like to encourage entrepreneurs to come forward.
“If they have an idea for a new product or service, then markets are an easy way to start up a business.”
