West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 September 2009

Libraries are not venues for international hype

AS someone who has lived in and around Westminster for more than 25 years I resent the degenerating state of the libraries toward increased commercialism.
On September 14 the Charing Cross library is hosting a talk by an international writer who is making a “pit-stop” in London to promote her book.
The Charing Cross library is the wrong venue. Go to Waterstones, Hatchards, Dillons, Borders, etc.
Local libraries are for people who live and work in and around the area and who want to share. I run the talks that I give about Alfred Hitchcock, John Lennon, Ida Lupino and others pro bono at the
St Martin’s reference library because it is a community and one in which I want to share/ participate.
Don’t allow the libraries to become just another platform for international hype.
