Sport for all: £4.5million eco-friendly hub opens on site of former children’s centre

AN eco-friendly “green roof” sports and community centre has opened in Little Venice.
The £4.5million centre on the site of the old Old Crompton Street Chidren’s Sports Centre boasts four badminton courts, large sports hall with under-floor heating, multi-purpose dance studio and a 30-station fitness suite which is also suitable for people with disabilities.
Activities available will also include netball, basketball, volleyball and martial arts.
Westminster City Council’s cabinet member for adult and community services Ed Argar said: “The new centre is set to become a major sporting hub in central London with a focus on training, educating and developing coaches, volunteers and staff. I’m sure it will also go a long way to enabling the local community to improve their fitness levels.”
The building features a high-tech IT training suite equipped with cameras to monitor and analyse athletes’ agility and durability to help identify how they should train better. It has a Ï“green” sedum roof to absorb CO2 and improve temperatures inside the building – keeping it warm in winter and cool in summer – and wind catchers on the roof will help ventilation.
The council have partly funded the scheme, along with £1.6million from Sport England, Skills Active, Big Lottery Fund and the John Lyon’s Charity Trust.
Westminster’s schools will have priority over bookings.an get involved in an activity or workshop – it’s an experience you will not forget!”
