West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 August 2009

New bike tax action

ON Sunday, thousand of bikers are expected to lend their voices to the No To Bike Parking Tax Campaign as they present a legal summons to Westminster City Council.

This throws open a new chapter in the year-long saga which has seen the parking department of the city council desperately trying to ignore the clamour of demonstrators, the thousands of objections via email and delivered by hand, the errors in its own procedures when the tax was brought in, and the glaring disparity of the income generated when it was sold on the basis of its revenue neutrality.
As the Conservative Party nationally cries out in anger at the proposed workplace parking tax for cars being piloted in Nottingham, the council seem intent on taxing motorbikes and scooters in much the same way.
Revenue-raising appears to be the primary concern, and protecting it the secondary concern. Listening to objectors seems to be lower on the list.
