West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 July 2009

We’ve had enough of these building works

• AS residents have had enough of building works in Fitzrovia.
It’s that simple really.
The construction industry clearly have no regard for the residents.
I am the former chair for the residents association at 25 Gresse Street. This position allowed me access to meetings with developers, consultations and discussions at various levels prior to works taking place. We have had to endure (yes endure) a three-year build which is nearing completion. The site of the build is Evelyn Yard. Residents do not wish to know about the mechanics of the builds taking place. All we are really interested in is how long we will have to put up the noise, the dust, the shouting, the engines running, the vehicles arriving before 8am etc.
Evelyn Yard has always been a nice cut-through for residents but to date we still don’t know if this short-cut will still be in place once the build has been completed. What access will be allowed to residents once the build has been completed?
What type of gate is to be installed? Has any public art been ordered (as was part of the planning application?) Will any form of compensation be paid to the residents for the inconvenience?
This is not an exhaustive list.
The yard was due to be closed for an interim period of six weeks for repaving, and as we are now at the six-week period, and no sign of the yard being opened again, how much longer will it be closed for?
“Liaising with the local community” is a phrase I take very loosely these days.
CHRIS HOWARD, Gresse Street, Fitzrovia
