Education in a state

• I HAVE always home educated (Forget school – it’s amazing what kids learn when they’re not forced, June 26) but recently my 13-year-old son expressed a wish to try mainstream school.
I always believed it was his choice so we checked out the local school and enrolled him. It was an education in itself and resulted in my son becoming introverted and scared because of what he saw. The education was non-existent and as a result I pulled him out a month later. Even though I informed the school, it took two weeks for the school to call and ask why my son was absent. They had taken no notice of the letter I had sent them.
The authorities should concentrate on improving the state education and leave home educators alone. Until they can offer my children an “education suitable to their age, ability and aptitude”, in a safe, happy and innocent environment, that allows children to grow into well adjusted adults, I will choose to home educate.
