West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 July 2009

Intimidating

• THE regime the government proposes is not only intimidating to home educators around the country, designed to deter people from making a legal choice about how they educate their children, but also extremely costly.

We don’t know exactly how many families choose to educate their children outside of the school system, but current estimates suggest between 40,000 and 80,000. This means home educating families are saving the government up to £320million a year in extra school places. If the new regulations go ahead, the number of home visits local authorities would have to make will approximately quadruple, requiring many more staff and training. Is the government really prepared to add to its enormous debt pile, and in doing so, attack another area of civil liberties?
