TfL consultants ‘cost millions’ claim

UNIONS have accused Transport for London of “wasting” millions of pounds on consultancy fees.
TfL’s consultants earn up to £2,700 a day according to Unison and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association. They have alleged TfL kept consultants on the payroll while laying off regular staff to meet its £2.4billion efficiency drive.
TfL said consultants brought in “specialist skills” and denied they were employed at the expense of regular staff.
In one year the congestion charging and enforcement department spent £5.4million on consultants, unions said. Unison leader Dave Prentis said: “If one small department is wasting £5.4million on consultants each year, then the total spent by TfL must be colossal.”
TfL’s spokesman said: “It is completely wrong to suggest that TfL is wasting millions or employing consultants at the expense of full-time staff. We are investing billions to deliver the best possible service and upgrade the transport network, which sometimes demands temporarily engaging specialist skills not otherwise available among our staff.”
