Uni under fire over backdated pay refusal

THE University and College Union (UCU) has slammed the University of Westminster for not backdating a new pay deal for lecturers – the only one of the UK’s 269 higher education institutions to refuse to do so.
A letter to staff obtained by the West End Extra shows that the university, which has increased pay for lecturers as part of the new national framework agreed in 2006, “cannot justify” backdating the payments because the “economy is now in serious recession and the government has announced cuts in higher education funding”.
The university will receive an additional £719,968 from the government.
According to the UCU, the university “had promised to give the union seven days’ notice if it intended to impose any changes to staff pay and conditions”.
A UCU spokesman said: “This is our members’ money, and is not for the university to hold back.”.
A Westminster spokesman responded: “These negotiations had become protracted after a few remaining significant issues could not be resolved.
“We remain fully committed to the long-standing recognition of, and productive relationship with, our trade unions.”
Staff have until 5pm on June 26 to decide whether to accept the new pay deal.
