1 in 5 rejected by school
ONE in five children in Westminster have been snubbed by their first-choice primary school.
It is believed the high rate of rejections is a result of parents turning their backs on private education during the recession, leading to more places being taken up in state schools.
Council chiefs are hoping parents will have a change of heart over the summer, freeing up spaces.
Cllr Mark Page, Westminster’s lead member for children’s services, said: “We fully expect that every child in Westminster will be allocated a primary school place by September. A number of children have not been offered one of their preferred places, but we expect this number to fall significantly over the next few weeks as young people who were offered a place, accept vacancies in neighbouring boroughs or at independent schools.”
Labour have called for an inquiry into the shortage. They say that 8 per cent of children in Westminster have no place at all – figures the council denies. |
